What is Lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system does not function properly. It results in long term swelling of one or more parts of the body. There are two types of Lymphoedema; primary and secondary.
Primary Lymphoedema may be seen when the lymphatic system is not fully developed and it fails to adequately move the fluid from the affected limb/limbs. It may present at birth or in the teenage years. Secondary Lymphoedema may develop due to damage to the lymphatic vessels or nodes. This may occur where the person has experienced:
